On Monday October 5, 2020, a video surfaced of a SARS police officer shooting a young man. The video caused public outcry. Subsequently, a second video emerged of a SARS killing another young man. Protests quickly developed into riots.

A SPAR supermarket in Lekki was destroyed and the company quickly issued a well-written statement. They reinforced their brand image as being dependable while demonstrating compassion towards the larger social issues the people of Nigeria face. The company subsequently published a raw photo of the destruction which drew a lot of support.
